EW! It almost looks like somebody stepped on the side of the bed and had crap on their shoe? Yes, those sorts of hostels can be nasty. But many hostels have like 2-4 bed dorms and even private rooms. So don't discount them the whole way. They can be really great places to meet fellow travellers.
