Facebook Is the Past, Medium Is the Future
Clinging to the past is not doing anybody any favors.
While reading a post by Dennett a while back, I was struck by what she had to say. She spoke to the fact that Facebook is like going back into the past.
I hadn’t seen it that way before. But of course, it is so true.
All of our ‘friends’ are brought back from times immemorial, and brought into the fold like they are still a part of our lives. Of course, they aren’t, but Facebook doesn’t let them go.
I will admit that at first, it was so great to get caught up with people that I hadn’t seen or even thought of in years, but over time, despite their presence on my Facebook feed, they faded off again. Some I even had to unfollow because I couldn’t stand what they were posting.
Probably the same reason that I fell out of touch with them in the first place.
So why do we cling to these connections? Why is it necessary to stay in touch with every person that we have ever known?
This year I decided that I had had enough of Facebook. I had been a regular user since 2007. As I said, initially I was so excited to connect with so many people that I had almost forgotten from my past life.
