Experiencing Livingston, Guatemala

A Garifuna culture with a Mayan Hispanic twist!

This was our view from the bedroom of the house where we housesat for 5 weeks in December 2018. It was located in Livingston, Guatemala, one of the only towns in Eastern Guatemala, on the Caribbean Sea. More precisely, it is located on the Amatique Bay, which is an offshoot of the Bay of Honduras, which then sits on the Caribbean Sea.

See map below for location, or click here to be taken there via google maps.

There are no roads to the town, instead, you must travel by boat from either Rio Dulce or Puerto Barrios. You can also come by boat from Belize, which is what some friends of ours did to visit us for New Year, which was a lot of fun.

The culture in Livingston is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Of course, Guatemala is steeped in Mayan and Hispanic culture, and it is similar to those cultures of its neighbors in Central America.

But not Livingston.

Livingston is in a world all its own.
