How Does One Sum Up A Grandparent?

A Eulogy to my Grandmother, Esther Hagel.

Photo of my younger grandmother. Used with permission.

You were known as Grandma, mostly. It was your name in our family, and it was your name in the community. Of course, many also knew you as Esther.

(Written on behalf of my family who will be attending her ash ceremony this month.)

How does one sum up a grandparent?

You did so much to enrich our lives, things we can’t even comprehend.

Some things that come to mind when we think of you:

  • Tomatoes, potatoes, gardens, and plants.
  • Big purses and change purses. So many change purses!
  • Bags, boy how you loved bags.
  • Blankets…….oh, so many blankets!
  • Avon
  • Bingo
  • A hearty laugh and an innocent giggle.
  • Knitting………so much knitting!
  • Generosity
  • A certain sarcasm and a sharp wit.
  • A nosy mind (maybe we can call it curious?)
  • Lists……so many lists!
  • A bad driver but a great cook.
  • Strudels, cookie batter, and borscht
  • Crocheting………so much…
