I completely understand your thoughts and reactions. We had the same experience in Nicaragua. But it did turn into a full on civil war there. We did end up leaving eventually. It’s certainly unsettling. It sounds like you are in a good spot. And it’s good that you have a local connection. Trust him, I’m sure he will let you know if it’s too dangerous.
