I have had a similar experience and it was the first time that I fully understood what, at least, discrimination felt like. Consequently it was also in Florida but in my case I walked into a coffee shop that wouldn't serve me coffee. I stood at the counter for 5 minutes waiting and wondering why the staff wouldn't turn around to serve me. When I finally looked around the room and saw that I was the only white person in there, I realized what the problem was. We were also in a shady part of town and coming from Canada and being just 23 years old, I had no idea that these sorts of places existed. Once I was back outside a nice man came and told me and my boyfriend that we shouldn't be there and that it was best to get back on the bus and leave. A very strange experience for sure. But it opened my eyes up to a lot of racial issues in a short period of time.
