Interesting post Carol. I've visited the USVI numerous times and always love the islands. I had to laugh at your reference to Feral chickens! Many places in the world (in fact I would say most) have free range chickens that roam the streets. They all do have a place that they go back to nest at the end of the day, though. Most are owned by people, but it just doesn't seem like it.
