Sounds like an incredible trip, Matthew. I definitely understand what you mean about trying to get off the tourist track to see how people truly live, but then being confronted with realities that are hard to swallow. But you are right, it is their culture and their way of doing things, and it’s often all they know. We shouldn’t judge, but it’s also very hard not to.
