This has happened to us on a few ocassions and i really do feel guilty.

…ed onto the next ferry. The locals who had been waiting for hours to board accepted this as normal. I felt grateful and guilty about our special treatment. I was sure all of them had far better reasons for needing to cross this river than I did.
