This is terribly sad but I will say that I too (a white Canadian) experienced much of what you described 20 years ago when my boyfriend and I entered certain establishments where we were clearly the minority. We lived in South Carolina for 2 months then moved through Georgia and Florida. In some cases we were ignored and not even served. Yes, we also were naive, as nothing like that existed in Canada. The racial divide in the US is like nothing I have experienced anywhere else in the world. Hard to believe what we experienced it in what was then 'the greatest country in the world.' These days people know better.
